General

Can I do full roll to roll lamination?

Yes you can. If you have the optional Roll feeder and Rewind unit full rolls of 50 metres can be easily laminated (and even trimmed) with very little efforts.

Which Electric System does it support?

First of all, the Shield has a standard C14 connector, so in case you damage the included cable by accident you can use any cable you have on hand or get a standard one in any local store.

The Shield works on any Electric system in your region. Be sure to check with your distributor for the suitable system for your region. The Shield does use standard outlet power and does not need ahigh-voltage system.

What is the maximum speed?

The maximum speed of the E-lam is 3m/min, the Shield and Shield+ is 5m/min, however most vinyl manufacturers advice a maximum speed of 4m/min concerning self adhesive PVC vinyls and for cast-vinyls even a maximum of 3m/min.

Does it have a security system?

Of course. We have an Infrared Sensor to eliminate risk at the rollers, and also a sensor at the table so that material failure is not possible. Next to this we have 2 very easy accessible alarm buttons which stop full operations on the machine immediately. (all power off) All according to CE certifications.

Do you have video tutorials online?

Yes we have on Youtube. You can find them all via our website and via our Newsblog. We plan to make new ones monthly and they’re all easy to find with tags.

Pneumatic Pressure

Do I need a seperate compressor?

Not with the Shield and Shield+, the compressor is completely integrated in the machine.
For the E-lam you can order a separate external compressor or use your own external compressor.

How can you control the pressure?

On the top-right of the laminator you have an easy to use control button to increase or decrease the air-pressure. On the back you find a very clear pressure gauge.

Can I install it to my own compressor?

For the E-lam, you can. No problem.

With the Shield and Shield+, you can’t. In order to guarantee the correct pressure of the Shield, we need to know exactly which compressor we’re working with, also not to experience any problems in case of overload. Also an external compressor brings an extra tube which is not very logical.

Does the compressor need maintanance?

Yes. We recommend to check the oil level every 6 months and untap any water when needed.

Which pressure setting should I use?

We recommend to you a general pressure setting around 5-6 Bar. We are working with vinyl manufacturers to check and adjust current advised pressure settings for each material. Updates on this can always be find at our website www.shieldlaminator.com

Do I need to keep pressure on the machine when turning off?

When you turn off the compressor, air pressure will slowly be removed. Don’t worry about damaging the laminating rollers. A small feather system makes sure they will never touch after time and become unstable which you see in many other manual laminators.

Heat and Heat-assist

Can I upgrade later to a heat-assist machine?

Yes you can! However there are some electric components that need to be changed so this is recommended to be done by a certified installer. Procedure is however quite fast and can be done within one hour.

Can I upgrade later to a double-hot laminator?

No, the Shield is designed for Signmakers and therefore the use of Self Adhesive Vinyls and not to be used for heat-activated laminates. We will not offer a changed version, however the manufacturer Neolt has several solutions for these applications like the Neolam H series.

The Shield+ is equipped with two hot rollers, but not upgradable from the normal Shield.

When should I use heat-assist.

Basically we recommend to use heat-assist as less as possible with PVC/Self Adhesive Vinyls which are used by signmakers. For monomeric vinyls, it’s fine to use it and it will cause no (or much less) “silvering” because adhesive will flow better. For thinner vinyls and especially cast vinyls the use of heat-assist is not recommended.

Important: For 3D applications like car-wrapping, never use heat-assist. This will stretch the very thin laminate and will cause problems during installation or soon after application. This is strictly indicated by most main manufacturers of signmaking/wrapping vinyls like 3M, Avery, Orafol, Arlon, etc. etc.

Can I do hot lamination?

No, the Shield is designed for Signmakers and therefore the use of Self Adhesive Vinyls and not to be used for heat-activated laminates. We will not offer a changed version, however the manufacturer Neolt has several solutions for these applications like the Neolam H series.

The Shield+ is equipped with 2 hot rollers until 120C, so then hot lamination is possible.

Modularity / Upgrades

Can I upgrade every option from the Base version?

Yes you can! Can can start already with a limited budget and enjoy to full benefits of the pneumatic power of the Shield laminator. This including our advanced tensioning system.

E-lam however is not designed to be modular, and has limited options.

Can I install all options myself later?

Some options we recommend to let them be installed by your distributors such as Heat Assist Unit and the Motorized Rewind Units and Feed Units. As they are not expensive options we recommend to add them to your initial purchase of the machine if your budget allows.

Automatic Trimmer Unit

Does the trimmer automatically allign?

No. You have to set the trimmer on the right position manually. Straight lamination (which is not hard on the Shield) is key to a perfect trimming job.

Trimmer is only an option with the Shield and Shield+.

Does it also trim horizontally?

No. Trimming is done only vertically (Y) so the trimming line runs along with the roll and also can be wound on the automatic rewind unit. You can easily trim it horizontally by hand on location, or for example on the Neolt electrotrim machines.

Trimmer is only an option with the Shield and Shield+.
